You might need a retaining wall and not even know it. Or maybe half your backyard is tumbling down a slope and you’re covered with dirt as you read this. So you absolutely know you need one.
These handy walls made of concrete blocks, rocks, or other materials hold back the soil behind them, which is especially helpful if your property includes a hill or a slope.

What can these handy walls do? Where do you need one? How much does retaining wall installation cost?

No place to sit down as you read this? Hmmm. Too bad you don’t have a retaining wall…

First, Why Are Retaining Walls So Great?

Lots of reasons:

Retaining Walls Hold Back Dirt

You don’t want to be known as that neighbor with the mudslides, right?
Retaining walls keep dirt from tumbling down sloped areas of your Central Florida property by holding back the soil.

They Prevent Erosion

Erosion is bad news. Sloped areas are targets for erosion. It washes away fertilizer and nutrients your soil needs, destroys plants, damages building foundations, and can cause dangerous sinkholes.

A good retaining wall helps prevent erosion by reducing the speed that water travels across the soil.

Retaining Walls Prevent Flooding

One of the benefits of a retaining wall is that it deters excess water from accumulating on your property. That means less chance of runoff damage and flooding.

They Create Usable Space

A big hill in your yard isn’t very useful.

But a tiered system of retaining walls can flatten out that useless hill, suddenly creating usable space to make your yard more functional.

Use the cool new space for attractive landscaping or even a mini patio. Create pretty raised planting beds. Have a retaining wall party!

Worried about seating? Retaining walls are often the perfect height to plop down for a chat or to help you balance that overflowing plate at your backyard barbecue.

How Much Does Retaining Wall Installation Cost?

As you might expect, there’s a huge price range here. The price of a retaining wall can range from a couple thousand dollars for a low, simple wall to tens of thousands for a large, more complicated retaining wall.

One important note about the cost to install a retaining wall in Central Florida: most municipalities require a permit first if a retaining wall will be taller than 12 inches.

That means your landscaping company may have a couple thousand dollars invested in permitting costs and engineer drawings before construction even begins.

Here in Central Florida, if a retaining wall is 30 to 36 inches tall or higher, then a fence or railing is also required, which adds to the cost of retaining wall installation.

A small, decorative retaining wall can be installed without a permit and can cost $2,000 or $3,000, but most retaining walls will cost several thousand dollars or more

Ground Source crews are currently working on a 44-foot long retaining wall about 40 inches tall with a cost of $16,000 with another $3,000 for the required railing.
